One aspect of reality that is quite complex for most people to understand is the heart. Simply because it cannot be understood through the normal channels of perception; the senses and the mind. Similarly, a lot of questions asked in the world today revolve around the heart, such as the morals of good and bad, when faced with situations that we have to deal with when life tests each individual to be impeccable in their behavior and to come back to the heart and to act out from that space which is not just right, but we know is right.
Of course, the heart referred to is not the emotional heart or the heart that feels the ups and downs of whatever is going on in life, but rather the essence of the heart which is the deeper feelings that one has, the deeper knowing of situations, the deeper aspects of who we are. All this energy, all this consciousness, I believe to be based deeply in the heart.
It is easier to understand this aspect when we are able to come back to a space where the heart has the ability to communicate to us in a way that is subtler than the obvious. We tend to always look on the outside for the signs, or the strong aspects to help us understand what the heart is actually trying to say, but usually, we put too much energy on the externals to allow that internal aspect of ourselves to really speak. Meditation is one of the best ways to allow this to happen.
So, I would like to share a simple meditation that brings back this sense of consciousness that we have lost in our civilization, as we have developed more and more into a society where everything is fast and everything is about creating an impact, rather than actually coming back home to one’s essence. To do this, It is important to bring back a sense of relaxation to the body.
Due to the simplicity of this meditation, it can be practiced in many places at any time. There is no right or wrong, this time or that time for this meditation and it only takes a few moments. It’s very easy. What we do is close our eyes because by closing our eyes the senses relax a little bit more. It is good to sit up and to have a straight back so that we are really focused on the conscious aspect of this meditation.
Now take a few moments to breathe in. The in breath is very important. Don’t just breathe in, in an automatic, mechanical sort of way. This is what happens when part of our attention moves to the external aspects, even the breath then becomes external to us but when we breathe in, what we are doing is bringing everything around us a little bit closer. We are affirming that we allow our heart to feel more intimate and vulnerable to the waves that come and go, and that life is always creating around us, with no fear.
As we breathe in, it’s impossible to feel fear. If we take a deep breath in, what we are doing is allowing the fear to move out of the space that occupies feelings. If we breathe in deeply, we are breathing in a life force that is very vibrant.
So, breathe in deeply and then just simply, breathe out and let go, and continue to breathe out and let go, and imagine that all those aspects of life that are swirling around in the mind, or that are occupying the space of the heart, or that are causing stressing or creating tension, imagine that we are letting them go.
Imagination is a very powerful tool, especially if we imagine that we are letting everything go through the outbreath. The stresses are moving out from our body, out from our feelings, out from our mind, all through the slow and deep exhalation. It requires a little bit of discipline to do this because it's so easy to drift back into another thought, another feeling, another situation, another idea, another dream.
Be sure to have a clear intention to let go and become an open vessel for the divine aspect that is inside of your heart. Let go of the mundane, no matter how important it is, no matter how practical those issues are that need to be dealt with. Give the heart a moment to deeply relax, to really come back to itself and then we are doing nothing, except breathing in and out deeply again.
As we breathe in deeply, we are not trying to change the thoughts or the feelings, we are simply allowing the vibrancy of the in-breath to fill our body. When we do this, what is happening is that we are helping the body move to a higher vibration, a higher state of being. This is the only possible way to change any situation around us, to move beyond it, by not getting attached, not being caught up, not being stuck or limited by whatever life is throwing at us., but rather to completely let go. Consequently, as we breathe in and completely let go of everything except the gratitude of being alive, we realize that all that counts is this moment and this moment is the inbreath.
As we breathe in, everything else is of no importance because after the inbreath there is a moment between the inbreath and the outbreath where we can be still, and in that stillness, there is an open space, a feeling that goes beyond human feelings. There is a deep, divine feeling that begins to bubble up from the depths into the wonderful beings that we are. The human aspect that is us and we begin to feel better. This is how transformation happens. We transform through joy and happiness.
As this beautiful vibrancy begins to become more our reality, things begin to shift and change. Wisdom comes to us in a very strong way and other, subtler, senses open. This is how we open the other senses and in doing so allow the energy of the divine to flow through all the glands of the body, all the organs of the body, including the mind and the heart and allow those aspects of who we are, to realize. And, as we are feeling this gratitude and aliveness in this moment, we realize what is really important and what is simply karma, what is simply an action that takes us nowhere.
When we know that time is precious, when we know that life is precious, we utilize this gift in a very special way. We don't waste it, we don't create limitations around it. We let go of whatever stops this feeling on the out breath.
As we begin to have this feeling, we can take a few moments to bring our consciousness back to the area of the heart, the heart energy point. Feel this in the chest and realize that we are not alone and that by taking this step, we are connecting to many other conscious beings around us who at this moment are celebrating the divine, and we have just been invited to this celebration!
What should we do now? When we breathe in and breathe out and feel good because there is happiness inside our heart; we celebrate and invite more people to this wonderful space that is ever expanding. This space is beyond the limitations of the mind and cannot be understood through the mind because it is beyond the limitations of negative emotions, such as selfishness, insecurity, low self-esteem, and all those human aspects that are important but that take us nowhere. We can now simply let them go.
As we move to a space of celebration, take a few moments to bring this awareness (even if it is just in the imaginary world) into our whole being. Then, the whole physiology of our body begins to change.
Meditation takes only a few moments, yet it changes much more than we may realize.
